First of all, let us define who is a veterinary surgeon. In its broad sense a veterinary surgeon or a veterinary is a doctor whose major responsibility is to prevent animals of different diseases as well as to give medical and surgical treatment to various sorts of animals including farm animals, household pets, zoo animals, and horses. The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) is the governing body of the profession of a veterinary surgeon in the United Kingdom. According to the Veterinary Surgeons Act which was adopted in the year of 1966 only a registered veterinary surgeon has the right to diagnose and give treatment to the injured animals as well as sick animals. Nevertheless, there may be some minor exceptions.
Well, not every person may become a good veterinary. This is quite a difficult profession requiring a number of obligatory conditions to be met. First of all, in order to become a veterinary, an individual must have a true tender love for animals. The matter is that your entire career will be devoted to taking care for animals and to interaction with them all the time. If you would like to become a veterinarian only to earn high salaries, don’t waste your time because sooner or later you will not bear this profession without love for animals. Sometimes, a veterinarian needs to spend long hours helping animals. Usually, this period is filled with many stresses unbearable for ordinary people.
Secondly, the profession of a veterinary requires from a person a great sense of responsibility, which is extremely important for the profession of a veterinary surgeon where sometimes a doctor will be required to take life and death decisions immediately. Thirdly, in order to become a good veterinary surgeon, an individual should be very good in studying, especially he or she should be strong in the profile science subjects. As far as it is known any medical profession demands from a studying person to learn enormous amounts of information and choose the necessary material when it is needed, the significance of academic intelligence arouses no questions. Thus, the well-being of an animal may depend on the skills and knowledge of a veterinary surgeon who needs to make a correct choice of the necessary course of treatment that may define whether an animal will live or die.
Fourthly, in order to master the profession of a veterinary in the best way, a future doctor should have good communication skills. The matter is that a veterinary has to interact animals’ owners who may not always be adequate, especially when it comes to the life of their animal. So, a veterinary may often need to comfort the owners before giving some help to their animals. Another feature necessary for the future veterinarian is curiosity. You probably have heard about such situations when even the most experienced and professional doctors don’t have a clue what is wrong with their animal-patient. Here it is important to have a desire to look for answers, to try more and more and finally to find a correct treatment. This is connected with love for animals. Think carefully do you really have enough boldness and willingness help animals?
Finally, an individual should have a great desire to study. It has to be mentioned that veterinary science, just like any other medical science though, is definitely unlimited. You may always open something new for yourself. Especially it is important for veterinary surgeons who have the closest relation to the sick animals. As we live in the world of science and technology, some new discoveries are constantly made in the medical field. Thus, new ways of treatments are being discovered every year, new discoveries are being made, the medical knowledge is quickly expanding all the time. Besides, the richness of the animal kingdom constantly opens to us more new exotic animals whose physiology is still a secret. So, not every veterinary will be able to deal with such animals, that’s why it is so important to constantly enrich your knowledge.
The academic perspicacity of the future veterinary surgeon is thoroughly tested during the application process to a course in the veterinary field. By the way, it has to be mentioned that the degree is obligatory for the aforementioned registration with the RCVS (The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons). An individual must obtain a degree from one of the six colleges which are approved by the RCVS (The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons), at universities in Glasgow, Nottingham, Liverpool, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, and London. It has to be said that admission requirements are rather strict, and a person will certainly need to have high academic grades demonstrated by the following credentials in his or her record:
– Biology ‘A’ Level, as well as one or two in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.
– Grades at ‘A’ Level, two A’s and a B, or, sometimes, three A’s.
– By the way, a distinction in BTEC Diploma in Animal Science may be paid attention to. Besides, an individual should have significant practical experience of working with animals that is usually also taken into consideration during the admission process to the particular veterinary course.
After an individual has successfully covered the veterinary course and obtained the necessary degree, he or she should enroll into the RCVS (The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons), which will give an excellent opportunity to practice in the United Kingdom. A person also has the right to add the letters MRCVS after his or her name, standing for Member of The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. If an individual has a desire to specialize in some certain field, he or she may study and receive extra diplomas on the subject field. The most common branches of specialization for small animal practice include dermatology, orthopaedics, soft tissue, ear, nose and throat. Some other options may also include zoo animals, wildlife, food-producing animals, equine veterinary practice, mixed practice, research and genetics.
So, this was just a short outline of what the profession of a veterinarian looks like. If you are still not disappointed and have a desire to choose this path good luck! However, don’t ever forget that this profession may sometimes seem too difficult, however recall how many animals have been treated by you and this will give you more strength to move further. This is possible, however, only if the profession of a veterinarian is a calling of yours. This is not a good choice for more people. A veterinary should have enough strength to spend long hours on serving animals and to see much death. So, think thoroughly before making the final decision.
